Shenzhen Airlines Resumes Shenzhen–Jakarta Route After Seven-Year Hiatus

Shenzhen Airlines resumed its Shenzhen–Jakarta route on October 19, ending a service gap of approximately seven years and five months following the route’s suspension in May 2019. The resumption re-establishes a direct air link between Shenzhen, China, and Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

In the early hours of October 20 local time, Shenzhen Airlines flight ZH161 arrived at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, marking the official return of the route. Initially, the service is scheduled to operate three times a week, with departures from Shenzhen on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and return flights from Jakarta on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. According to the published schedule, the frequency is set to increase to daily service from December 1, with seven flights per week in each direction.

Flight ZH161 is scheduled to depart Shenzhen at 20:50 local time and arrive in Jakarta at 00:55 the following day. Flight ZH162 is scheduled to depart Jakarta at 01:55 local time and arrive in Shenzhen at 08:05 the same day. The route is operated by Boeing 737 aircraft. Flight times and aircraft information are subject to the airline’s latest published schedules.

Passenger figures on the first day of resumed operations were strong. Flight ZH161 carried 152 passengers, with a load factor of 95%, while the return flight, ZH162, carried 147 passengers, achieving a load factor of 92%. These figures offer an initial indication of passenger demand following the route’s resumption, although performance over the longer term remains to be seen.

A ceremony marking the route’s resumption was also held in Jakarta, attended by representatives of Indonesian tourism authorities, airport management and air navigation partners. Representatives noted that the restored service would give travelers between China and Indonesia more travel options and facilitate tourism, business travel and trade between the two countries. According to the announcement, the Shenzhen–Jakarta route is the 40th commercial air link between China and Indonesia. With the route back in operation and a further frequency increase planned, air connectivity between the two destinations is expected to strengthen further.
