American Airlines Advances Long-Haul Fleet Renewal, Potential Order for Up to 70 Widebody Aircraft Remains Unconfirmed

American Airlines is considering an order for up to 70 widebody aircraft as it prepares to modernize its long-haul fleet and expand international operations. As of October 22, 2026, the potential purchase remains unconfirmed, despite reports suggesting an announcement could coincide with the airline’s third-quarter earnings. The proposed deal could strengthen American Airlines’ fleet strategy for the next decade, with deliveries expected to begin from 2030 onward.

The airline is reportedly evaluating the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family and Airbus A350 series as potential options to replace its aging Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. The existing fleet plays an important role in American Airlines’ international operations, but replacement planning is becoming increasingly important as these aircraft approach retirement in the 2030s. The final decision will depend on aircraft performance, purchase prices, delivery availability, and the airline’s long-term operational requirements.

The potential widebody order also reflects American Airlines’ ambition to strengthen its transpacific network, particularly through Los Angeles International Airport. The carrier aims to expand its presence in Asian markets and improve its competitiveness on long-haul routes. Newer aircraft could also provide opportunities to increase premium-cabin capacity, improve fuel efficiency, and offer passengers an enhanced onboard experience. However, the aircraft models and the final number of jets have not been officially confirmed.

American Airlines has not publicly confirmed a finalized agreement for the reported 70-aircraft purchase as of October 22. The airline is expected to continue evaluating proposals from Airbus and Boeing before making its decision. Any future order would represent a significant investment in its international fleet and could influence its network development throughout the 2030s. Further details about aircraft selection, order quantities and delivery schedules remain subject to an official announcement.
